Phat Beets Produce, a North Oakland Food Justice Collective, is making it's equitable CSA "Beet Box" produce box available for the Occupy Oakland Kitchen through donation subscriptions.
Supporters are now able to order a weekly box of locally grown produce, including produce grown in Oakland by small, minority farmers to donate to the Occupy Oakland kitchen to help feed the occupy movement. Boxes will be delivered to the Occupy Oakland kitchen weekly, providing fresh pesticide free and organic fruits and vegetables for the kitchen CSA's and farmers' markets help small farmers' access the market in a more equitable fashion with higher margins for small farmers', but they aren't always affordable for low-income populations. CSA's such as the Beet Box, People's Grocery's "Grub Box" and Dig Deep Farms help bridge this gap between farmers' of color and low-income communities.
The “Beet Box” is an equitable CSA (community supported agriculture) box. It not only supports a diverse group of under-supported small organic and pesticide-free farmers growing a diverse array of vegetables on land ranging from 3-40 acres, it also supports and sustains a small chain of clinic and community based farmers’ markets in North Oakland. Each box provides a $2 voucher for a family suffering from diet related diseases (at the clinic where the market is located) to try eating fresh produce from the farmers’ market. The box is available for pickup on Saturday afternoon through Sunday in a variety of North Oakland and Berkeley locations. More information can be found here. |
